What kind of surround or mantel can be cast?
A surround frames the fire and holds the room together. It’s the first thing you see when you walk in, so it has to fit the opening exactly.
- One-piece frames round an open fire or a stove opening
- Frames with a mantel shelf cast on
- Floating mantel shelves on their own
- Surrounds for inset stoves and gas or electric fires
- Plinths and shelves for a media wall
Each one is cast in a mould made for the job, so the corners are cast, not mitred.
What do you need to send?
Four things are enough to draw a surround and price it. A phone photo and a tape measure cover most of them.
Width and height of the fire opening, in millimetres.
The stove or fire model, and its installation manual if you have it.
Brick, block or stud, and whether it’s a chimney breast.
Your existing hearth, or a new one cast to match.

Will my wall hold a concrete surround?
At 30mm, concrete weighs about 70kg a square metre, the same as granite or quartz. Most of that weight is on the wall, so it’s planned before the mould is made.
GFRC can be cast thinner with a returned edge. It still reads as a solid block, and weighs less. A stud wall needs support behind it. Your builder or installer chooses the fixings and confirms the wall can take it.
How close can it sit to the fire?
Your stove or fire’s manual sets that, not the surround. It gives the gap to the sides, the top and any shelf above. The surround is drawn to those figures.
The sealer, SureCrete XS-327, is rated to 149°C. Near a stove it can run hotter, so the manual’s gaps come first.
Gaps to the sides, top and shelf come from your fire’s instructions.
How high a shelf has to sit above the opening.
Your installer checks the finished fireplace against the manual and the rules.

Can the hearth match the surround?
Yes, and it’s better if they’re cast together. Same mix, same batch and same pour mean the colour matches exactly, not nearly.
The hearth page covers the sizes your stove needs and the price.

Questions people ask
What does a concrete fireplace surround cost?
From £1,200, supply only, for a frame up to 1300mm wide and 1200mm high in any of our named colours. Bigger frames, a cast-on shelf or a media wall are quoted from your sizes and the fire model. Ask for a quote
Can a concrete surround go round a wood burner?
Yes, as long as it keeps to the gaps in the stove’s manual. Send the model and the surround is drawn to them. Your installer confirms it suits the stove.
Does it work with a gas or electric fire?
Yes. Gas and electric fires come with their own clearances for the surround and any shelf. Send that page of the instructions and the drawing works to it. Some fires set rules for the surround material, and your installer checks those.
Can I have a mantel shelf without a full surround?
Yes. A floating shelf can be cast on its own, and your builder or installer chooses fixings to suit your wall. The fire’s manual sets how high above the opening it has to sit.
Can you make a media wall surround?
Yes. Frames, plinths and shelves for a media wall are cast to your drawing, and the fire’s instructions set the gaps.
Will soot mark it?
Every piece is sealed with SureCrete XS-327, which resists most household chemicals and food. Wipe soot off early with a damp cloth. If the sealer is ever scuffed, it can be touched up in place. Care and sealing
Do concrete surrounds crack?
Not when the mix, reinforcement and design are right for the job. A crack means one of those was wrong, so a cracked surround is a failure, never character.
If anything we make fails through our fault in the first year, we remake it. From year two to five, we repair it, or remake it if it can’t be repaired. The full answer on cracking
Who fits it?
Usually your fireplace or stove installer, as part of the job they sign off. The surround arrives finished and sealed. Installers and fireplace showrooms can use our trade enquiries.
What clients say
“They took our vision and turned it into something better than we had imagined.”
“He advised and involved us in every step of the design process.”
“Really happy with the final result.”
See the colour by your fire.
A surround is seen by firelight and lamplight, and a screen can’t show you that. Pick your colours in either finish, and the tablets come to you free, anywhere in the UK.
No cost, no obligation. Every surround is backed by our 5-year guarantee.
