What can be cast for a fireplace?
A hearth is a slab with a job to do. It has to be the right size for the stove, sit flat on the floor and look like it belongs in the room.
- Stove hearths: square, rectangular, T-shaped, curved or cut to a corner
- Raised hearths and stove benches
- Fireplace surrounds and mantel shelves, on their own page
- Floating hearths
Each one is cast in a mould made for your fireplace, so an awkward shape costs a mould, not a joint.
What size hearth does a wood burner need?
In England, Approved Document J sets the minimum. A stove standing in the open sits on a constructional hearth at least 840mm square and 125mm thick. A stove tested to keep its hearth under 100°C can stand on a 12mm hearth instead, as long as it reaches 225mm in front and 150mm each side.
The smallest constructional hearth for a stove that isn’t in a recess.
From the stove’s front to the hearth edge. 300mm for an open fire, or a stove used with its doors open.
From the stove’s sides to the hearth edge.
Only for a stove tested to keep the hearth under 100°C. Otherwise a 125mm constructional hearth goes underneath.
Wales and Scotland have their own rules. Your stove’s manual can ask for more, and your installer signs off the result. Send us both and the hearth is drawn to the bigger figure.

Can concrete take the heat of a stove?
Document J names concrete as a hearth material. On a ROKA hearth the working limit is the sealer, SureCrete XS-327, rated to 149°C.
A stove allowed on a 12mm hearth keeps the surface under 100°C, well inside that. A stove that needs a constructional hearth can run hotter than that. So you tell us the model before anything is drawn, and only a hearth the manual allows gets drawn.
Cast, not cut.
A stone yard cuts your hearth from the slab it has in stock. A cast hearth is made to your drawing, so a T-shape or a curve comes out as one piece.

Need a surround or mantel to match?
A surround and shelf can be cast in the same mix as your hearth, so the colour matches exactly. Weight, wall fixings and fire clearances are covered on the surrounds page.

Questions people ask
What does a concrete hearth cost?
£850 a square metre up to 30mm thick, supply only, then £15 a square metre more for each millimetre above 30mm. So a 900 × 900mm hearth at 30mm is about £700.
A T-shape or a curve needs its own mould, and a raised hearth or bench is more concrete, so those are quoted. Send the sizes and the stove model for a real figure. How the price is worked out
How thick should a hearth be?
At least 12mm, and only if your stove is tested to keep the hearth under 100°C, and its manual will say so. Otherwise the stove needs a 125mm constructional hearth, and a concrete hearth can sit on top of it as the finished surface.
Do I need a hearth for a gas or electric fire?
It depends on the fire. The maker’s installation instructions say whether a hearth is needed and how big. Send us that page and the hearth or plinth is drawn to it.
Will ash or soot mark it?
Every piece is sealed with SureCrete XS-327, which resists most household chemicals and food. Sweep ash once it’s cold and wipe the hearth with a damp cloth. If the sealer is ever scuffed, it can be touched up in place. Care and sealing
Do concrete hearths crack?
Not when the mix, reinforcement and design are right for the job. A crack means the mix, the reinforcement or the design was wrong, so a cracked hearth is a failure, never character.
If anything we make fails through our fault in the first year, we remake it. From year two to five, we repair it, or remake it if it can’t be repaired. The full answer on cracking
Who fits it?
Usually your stove installer, as part of the installation they sign off. The hearth arrives finished and sealed, ready to set in place. Installers and fireplace showrooms can use our trade enquiries.
How long does it take?
3 to 6 weeks from design sign-off, and rush jobs are possible by agreement.

See the colour by your fire.
A hearth sits low, under firelight and lamplight, and a screen can’t show you that. Pick your colours in either finish, and the tablets come to you free, anywhere in the UK.
No cost, no obligation. Every hearth is backed by our 5-year guarantee.
Tell us about the fireplace
The stove or fire model, a photo of the space and rough sizes are enough. You’ll hear what size the hearth needs, what it sits on and roughly what it costs.
