A concrete dining table top at 30mm weighs about 70kg for every square metre, no heavier than granite or quartz at the same thickness. Four people can lift one, and a sealed top takes dinner as it comes. Pick the base to suit it, and you've got a table that lasts.
How heavy is a concrete dining table?
At 30mm, concrete weighs about 70kg per square metre. That's lighter than 30mm granite at about 80kg, and close to quartz at about 72kg. Multiply by the area of your top and you have its weight.
Thicker tops weigh more in proportion. Our designer goes up to 50mm, so a 50mm top is about two thirds heavier than a 30mm one. That's still a carry, not a crane. Once it's on its base, it stays put.
What should a concrete dining table sit on?
A firm, level base. Trestle ends, solid pedestals, steel legs and an oak frame all suit it. A pale top looks sharp on dark steel legs, and a darker one sits well on oak. Whatever you choose, make sure it's firm and level.
We supply the top and you choose the base. If you'd like help finding one, ring us on 01273 049411.
Before the top goes on, take a photo of the support and send it to us. That's all we ask. In return you get five years on the making. If a fault comes from how we cast it, we remake it in year one and repair it to year five.
Can it take a family dinner?
I cooked for a living for ten years, so I look hard at what a table goes through. Hot dishes, wet glasses and a dropped fork in the same evening.
The seal is SureCrete XS-327, a two-part, water-based hybrid polyurethane. It goes on as a prime coat and two coats. Water beads on it, and the maker rates it stain resistant to most household chemicals and food. It's rated to 149°C, about 50°C hotter than boiling water, so a pan of pasta goes straight onto it. A frying pan off a high flame goes on a board or trivet, as it would on stone.
Wipe spills up as you would on any table. If a patch of seal ever wears, it can be lightly sanded and recoated in place.
Can you choose the size and colour?
Yes. Order a standard size or have one made to yours, from 30mm up to 50mm thick. The colour is in the concrete itself, not painted on. If your kitchen has an island, a top in the same colour ties the eating end of the room to the cooking end.
Each top is made to order, and we make the concrete and work alongside your kitchen maker or fitter. Sizes, thicknesses and prices are on our dining table tops page.
How big can a top be?
The designer makes pieces up to 3m long and 1.2m deep. A top that size is a long table, so plan the base and the route into the room before delivery. We're happy to talk it through by phone.
How can you check the colour first?
Ask for a sample. It's free, and the colour you hold is the colour you get. Put one on your own table and look at it in daylight. Order your free samples and set one beside your chairs.
